Basketball Recap: Varina Comes Up Short

Varina was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They had to suffer through a 79-23 loss at the hands of the Highland Springs Springers. While losing is never fun, the Blue Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 319th, while the Springers are ranked 50th).

Varina's loss came despite strong showings from Kya Ingram and Kaliyah Straughter. Ingram posted ten points in addition to six steals and five boards, while Straughter earned six points along with 12 rebounds and three steals. Ingram has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 12 times she's played. Paris Harper also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.

Even though they lost, Varina smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Highland Springs found their leader in sophomore Jesiah Young, who put up 26 points. With that strong performance, Young is now averaging an impressive 15.2 points per game. Samaya Brown was another key player, putting up 19 points.

Varina's defeat dropped their record down to 2-13. As for Highland Springs, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Coming up, Varina will challenge Hermitage at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Highland Springs, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 46-43 loss against The Covenant on the 14th.
