Baseball Recap: Matanzas' Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

With a playoff win on the line, Matanzas rose to the challenge on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Gainesville Hurricanes 5-3. The victory was some much needed relief for the Pirates as it spelled an end to their 14-game losing streak.

Matanzas got a great performance from Seth Avellar as he struck out 13 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). Those 13 strikeouts gave Avellar a new career-high.

On the hitting side, Seth Garcia was a standout: he scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Gianni Cerbone, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

Matanzas kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gainesville only managed six hits.

Matanzas' win bumped their record up to 2-23. As for Gainesville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season.

Matanzas will square off against Seabreeze at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gainesville does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
