Basketball Recap: Brayden Upole and Jacob Brown Secure Win for Southern

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Southern walked away with it. They were the clear victor by a 77-54 margin over the Northern Garrett Huskies on Saturday. The victory continues a trend for the Rams in their matchups with the Huskies: they've now won six in a row.

Southern was led to victory by Jacob Brown and Brayden Upole. Brown went 8-for-11 en route to 20 points along with seven assists and five rebounds, while Upole shot 57% from the field on his way to 18 points in addition to six boards and three steals. Upole has become a key player for Southern: the team is undefeated when he posts at least three steals, but 6-10 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jared Haskiell, who went 5-for-11 to rack up 11 points and five assists.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Southern was working as a unit and finished the game with 25 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Southern's win bumped their record up to 13-10. As for Northern Garrett, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-13.

Looking ahead, Southern will face off against Fort Hill at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Southern will be up against Fort Hill's rather soft defense (which has allowed 55.52 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. Northern Garrett does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
