The Southmont Mounties will take on the Covington Trojans at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Southmont has six straight victories, Covington has four straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
If Southmont beats Covington with nine runs on Monday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Mounties put the hurt on North Montgomery with a sharp 9-3 win on Saturday. The Mounties might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.

Ella Barry made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Catie Himes and Anna Stokes did most of the damage at the plate: Himes went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run, while Stokes went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs. That's the most runs Stokes has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jenna Grino, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Covington fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Milford on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 8-5 to the Bearcats.
Alexus Peaslee spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and five unearned) runs on seven hits.
At the plate, Caydence Peaslee made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Sutherlin, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.
Southmont pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Covington, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-8.
Covington's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Southmont has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Covington, though, as they've been averaging only 3 strikeouts. Will Southmont keep running through batters, or will the Trojans buck the trend?
Everything went Southmont's way against Covington in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Southmont made off with an 18-4 victory. Do the Mounties have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
