Baseball Recap: Bellevue Comes Up Short

Bellevue was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of the Mercer Island Islanders. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Bellevue got a good showing from Jack Odegaard, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Odegaard has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Ellis Oeltjen was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Jessie Gonzalez was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

Bellevue's loss dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Mercer Island, their victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 3-8.

Coming up, Bellevue will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Ellensburg at 12:00 p.m. As for Mercer Island, they will head out to challenge Newport - Bellevue at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
