Preview: McDowell Titans vs. Avery County Vikings
The McDowell Titans will head out on the road to face off against the Avery County Vikings at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. McDowell will be strutting in after a victory while Avery County will be coming in after a loss.
McDowell has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 38 points or more this season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Thursday as they easily beat R-S Central 68-30 on the road. The win made it back-to-back wins for McDowell.
McDowell can attribute much of their success to Clara McCartha, who scored 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sage Young, who scored 11 points.
Meanwhile, Avery County was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 52-46 to Erwin.
Caroline Hollifield put forth a good effort for the losing side as she scored 18 points along with 5 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Reagan Greer, who scored 9 points along with 7 rebounds.
McDowell's victory bumped their season record to 3-1 while R-S Central's defeat dropped theirs to 3-3.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: McDowell hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 62.2 points per game. It's a different story for Avery County, though, as they've been averaging only 47 per game. The only thing between McDowell and another offensive beatdown is Avery County. McDowell strolled past Avery County in their previous meeting back in December of 2022 by a score of 42-25. The rematch might be a little tougher for McDowell since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
