Softball Preview: Apex Cougars vs. New Bern Bears

The Apex Cougars will challenge the New Bern Bears at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

On Thursday, it was close, but Apex sidestepped Union Pines for a 6-4 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.

Audrey Mulaski was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Mulaski was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Leah Kendall, who scored two runs and stole Three bases. while going 1-for-2. She has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Lauren McMahon, who scored a run and stole a base.

Meanwhile, New Bern put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 7-6 W against Havelock.

Like Apex, New Bern also got a great game from a two-way player: Anna Champey. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts Champey has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing Four bases. while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.

In other batting news, Ki'Mya Sutton and Ellie Poston did most of the damage at the plate: Sutton scored two runs while going 3-for-5, while Poston scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave Sutton a new career-high.

Apex's victory bumped their record up to 2-0. As for New Bern, their win bumped their record up to 3-0.
