Softball Game Preview: Volunteer Falcons vs. Cherokee Chiefs

The Volunteer Falcons will head out to face off against the Cherokee Chiefs at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Volunteer has six straight wins, Cherokee has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

While Volunteer didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past Chuckey-Doak 16-0 on Tuesday. That looming 16-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Falcons yet this season.

Zetta Smith and Emily Walker did most of the damage at the plate: Smith scored two runs while going 2-for-3, while Walker scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Jenna Thomas was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-2.

Volunteer was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .526. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .393 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, Cherokee didn't have quite enough to beat Sullivan East on Thursday and fell 6-4.

Volunteer's victory bumped their record up to 6-0. As for Cherokee, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-9.

Everything went Volunteer's way against Cherokee when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Volunteer made off with a 19-5 win. Will Volunteer repeat their success, or does Cherokee has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
