Softball Recap: Shaker Wins Going Away Against Columbia

After losing to Columbia the last time they met, Shaker decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Bison blew past the Blue Devils 12-4 on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Bison, who have now won six matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Hannah Hipwell made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

In other pitching news, Talyn Chernosky looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Ruby Szemplinski, who fired off two home runs and six RBI while going 2-for-3. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Sarah Syden was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Shaker pushed their record up to 10-7 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Columbia, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-9.

Shaker does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Columbia, they will venture away from home to face off against Ballston Spa at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Devils' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Scotties have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season.
