Basketball Recap: Estancia Takes a Loss

If Estancia was feeling good fresh off their 60-25 takedown of Clayton last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Estancia Bears took a 61-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pecos Panthers on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 56-22 two weeks ago.

When it comes to explaining why Estancia lost, don't look at Jhenna Valencia. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Valencia's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least 19 points. Another player making a difference was Karina Villafuerte, who posted seven points and four steals.

Natalia Stout continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Pecos, going 8-for-20 on her way to 21 points along with eight boards and eight steals. Stout is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Leah Gonzales, who earned 11 points.

Estancia's loss dropped their record down to 13-12. As for Pecos, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-6 record this season.

Estancia has already played their next matchup, a 39-32 victory against Santa Rosa on the 20th. Pecos has also already played their next contest (against Clayton), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
