Baseball Recap: Blacksburg's Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

Blacksburg can bid farewell to their eight-game losing streak thanks to their game on Monday. They blew past the Berea Bulldogs 10-1. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Wildcats considering their one-run performance the match before.

Matty Cody made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. He has been consistent : he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing five bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Blacksburg's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 1-13 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Blacksburg let Jakob Reid and Dayvon Garrison run wild. Reid scored two runs and stole three bases while going 1-for-3, while Garrison scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Garrison has become a key player for Blacksburg: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-13 otherwise. Kaison Hollifield was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.

Blacksburg's win bumped their record up to 3-14. As for Berea, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost ten of their last 11 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-12 record this season.

Blacksburg will challenge Brashier Middle College Charter at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bengal have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season. As for Berea, they will square off against Carolina Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are facing the Trojans at the right time seeing as the Trojans are stuck on an eight-game losing streak.
