Baseball Recap: Los Lunas Makes It Seven in a Row at Home

It may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but Los Lunas ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 win over the St. Pius X Sartans. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Jonah Utash made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024.

Utash wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Castillo, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Los Lunas' victory was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-6. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.1 runs over those games. As for St. Pius X, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 6-8.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Los Lunas will take on Sandia at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Sandia's pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so Los Lunas' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for St. Pius X, they will take on Carlsbad in a tournament on Thursday. Carlsbad will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something St. Pius X surely won't give up without a fight.
