Basketball Recap: Lowry's Winning Streak Snapped at Five Games

It was a good run, but Lowry unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Saturday. They took a 51-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Fernley Vaqueros. The Buckaroos were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Vaqueros apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Lowry still got an impressive performance from Britain Backus, who posted 23 points in addition to seven steals and six boards. That was a full 56.1% of Lowry's points, marking the 13th time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Natalee Formby was another key player, putting up six points and five steals.

Fernley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Justice Martell Artiaga led the charge by going 8 for 11 en route to 16 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Taylor Tollestrup, who went 5 of 12 on her way to 16 points along with six boards and four blocks.

Lowry's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 10-5. As for Fernley, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-4 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lowry will face off against Pershing County at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Fernley, they will head out to face off against Dayton at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Fernley is facing Dayton at the right time seeing as Dayton is stuck on an 11-game losing streak.
