Recap: Buckeye Hawks vs. Estrella Foothills Wolves
The Buckeye Hawks came tearing into Saturday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Estrella Foothills 62-60. With that victory, Buckeye brought their scoring average up to 50.6 points per game.
Among those leading the charge was Kiria Avila escarcega, who scored 27 points along with seven assists. That's the first time this season that she scored 15 or more points. Isabel Ramirez was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Estrella Foothills' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Eva Amenhauser, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Madison Pond, who scored 15 points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Estrella Foothills smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Buckeye only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
Buckeye is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a massive bump to their 11-7 record this season. As for Estrella Foothills, their loss dropped their record down to 18-3.
Buckeye's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Copper Canyon at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th. Copper Canyon has insisted on making their lastfive contests complete nail-biters, turning in a record of 2-3 during that stretch of close contests. As for Estrella Foothills, they will head out on the road to take on Goldwater at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Goldwater will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 245th, while Estrella Foothills is ranked 38th).
