Softball Recap: Union City Sets Scoring Season-High Against Mcnair Academic

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Union City). Their pitcher stepped up to hand the McNair Academic Cougars an 18-0 shutout on Wednesday. Considering the Soaring Eagles have won seven games by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Zaylee Vargas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Vargas was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zo? Mays, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (four). Another player making a difference was Natalia Montenegro, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Union City always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .840. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

The victory (which was Union City's third in a row) raised their record to 7-12. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for McNair Academic, the loss snapped their winning streak at five games and leaves them with a 14-3 record.

Looking ahead, Union City will face off against Elizabeth at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for McNair Academic, they will take on Linden at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
