Basketball Recap: Maddy Weisler and Taylor Calkins Secure Win for Sandia Prep

Sandia Prep's game last Saturday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Legacy Academy Silverbacks 49-47. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Sundevils also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2024.

Sandia Prep was led to victory by Taylor Calkins and Maddy Weisler. Calkins dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 boards, while Weisler almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 13 rebounds. What's more, Weisler also racked up three assists, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Laura Udoni, who posted six points.

Sandia Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Despite the defeat, Legacy Academy saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Eden Griffis dropped a double-double on ten points and 19 boards. Those 19 rebounds set a new season-high mark for Griffis. Analyssa Montoya also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Sandia Prep has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a massive bump to their 6-7 record this season. As for Legacy Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-4.

Sandia Prep has already played their next matchup, a 63-47 loss against Albuquerque Academy on the 16th. Legacy Academy has also already played their next game (against Oak Grove Classical Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
