League recap: Samber breaks off league-leading run for Akron

A-8 North - Plains (8 Man) recap Oct. 3, 2012

Akron's Riley Samber recorded the longest rushing play in A-8 North - Plains (8 Man) this season in his game against Haxtun last week. Samber's team defeated the Fightin' Bulldogs as he sprinted for 78 yards on the play and finished with 103 in all.

Merino suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 41-21 loss to Dayspring Christian Academy. The Rams had been ranked 24th, but fell to 26 following the defeat.

Akron's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Jared Clarkson threw for 93 and two touchdowns and Austin Spear had 45 yards receiving. On the ground Levi Hottinger chipped in 163 yards. Hottinger helped Akron's passing attack out by catching two balls for 24 yards.

The Eagles' 6-foot-0 quarterback Kylar Mai is the league leader in passing yards this season with 390. On the ground, Brian Christensen's team's Hottinger has rushed for 598 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Garret Basler. The Akron star has nine catches for 187 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between the Rams and Caliche. Akron comes into the matchup ranked 11th in the state, while the Buffaloes ranks eighth.

Caliche extended the longest winning streak in A-8 North - Plains (8 Man) this week by beating Sedgwick County, 37-0. The win marks fifth in a row for the Paul Zink's team.
