Football Recap: Phoenix Christian Cougars vs. Scottsdale Christian Academy Eagles
If Phoenix Christian was riding high fresh off their 56-0 takedown of Mountainside last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cougars took a 41-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Scottsdale Christian Academy Eagles on Saturday. Despite 199 more yards than the Eagles, the Cougars couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Z'Yeon Rondan, who rushed for 127 yards and two TDs while picking up 7.5 yards per carry. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 68 yards. Aaron Whitten also helped out as he racked up 139 rushing yards.
Scottsdale Christian Academy got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Sean Helgeson out in front who threw for 208 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for 40 yards. Helgeson is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for four or more in each of the last four games he's played. Isaiah Steffen did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 88 receiving yards.
Having lost for the first time this season, Phoenix Christian fell to 7-1. As for Scottsdale Christian Academy, the win keeps them at an undefeated 8-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Phoenix Christian will face off against Veritas Prep at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cougars will need to watch out since the Falcons have now posted at least 31 points in their last three matchups. As for Scottsdale Christian Academy, they will square off against Camp Verde at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cowboys' defense has only allowed 8.9 points per game this season, so the Eagles' offense will have their work cut out for them.
