Softball Preview: Abilene Eagles vs. Wylie Bulldogs
The Abilene Eagles will venture away from home to face off against the Wylie Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Abilene had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the eight-run drubbing they dealt Legacy on Tuesday. Abilene never let Legacy get on the board and left with an 8-0 win. Winning may never get old, but the Eagles sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Kaylee Gonzales and Izabella Rocha made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Gonzales pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Rocha pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Gonzales scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3, while Rocha scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Those three stolen bases gave Gonzales a new career-high.
In other batting news, Mariah Estrada and Alicia Gutierrez did most of the damage at the plate: Estrada went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI, while Gutierrez scored a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Claudia Ceballos also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wylie). Everything went their way against Legacy on Friday as Wylie made off with a 24-0 victory. The win was some much needed relief for the Bulldogs as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Abilene's victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-7. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for Wylie, they now have a winning record of 10-9.
