The Copper Hills Grizzlies are taking a road trip to face off against the Layton Lancers at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Copper Hills is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Copper Hills took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They came out on top against West Jordan by a score of 9-5. The Grizzlies haven't had any issues with the Jaguars recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Averi Yazzie was incredible, scoring two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Dulce-Liliani Moreno also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Layton is still winless after their contest against Weber on Tuesday, but the team can take solace in the fact it was the closest they've come to winning. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-8 heartbreaker at the hands of the Warriors. On the bright side, the eight- run effort marked the Lancers' highest-scoring game to date.
Macie Clark was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Woodall, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Copper Hills' victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Layton, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.
Layton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Copper Hills has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Layton, though, as they've been averaging 9.8 hits. Given Copper Hills' sizable advantage in that area, the Lancers will need to find a way to close that gap.
Copper Hills might still be hurting after the 19-7 defeat they got from Layton in their previous meeting back in May of 2019. Can the Grizzlies avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
