Recap: Newton Eagles vs. Dieterich Movin Maroons

The Newton Eagles won the last time they faced the Dieterich Movin Maroons, and things went their way on Friday too. Newton skirted past Dieterich 52-50. Given Newton's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 102nd, while Dieterich is ranked 258th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

When it comes to explaining why Dieterich lost, one person who can't be blamed is Lucas Westendorf. Despite the final result, he scored 25 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Westendorf continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Caleb Gephart, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds.

Newton's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.3 points per game. As for Dieterich, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-4.

Newton and Highland will round out the year against one another at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at. Highland is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games. Dieterich will finish 2023 at home by hosting Ramsey at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
