Basketball Recap: Miller Takes a Loss

Miller was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They received a blow as they fell 59-44 to the Gregory-Portland Wildcats. If the Buccaneers were looking for revenge after losing 58-52 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.

When it comes to explaining why Miller lost, don't look at Hailey Martinez. Despite the final result, she went 8 for 18 on her way to 22 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals. Martinez's evening made it five games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Julissa Ramirez, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine boards.

Even though they lost, Miller smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gregory-Portland only pulled down four offensive boards.

Jariyah Whitehead was a one-woman wrecking crew for Gregory-Portland as she went 6 of 7 on her way to 18 points. The dominant performance gave Whitehead a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Bella Davis, who posted nine points and eight assists.

Miller's defeat dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Gregory-Portland, their victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-8.

Miller didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 44-40 win against King on the 17th. As for Gregory-Portland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 51-27 victory against Ray on the 17th.
