Baseball Game Preview: St. Bernard Vikings vs. North Saxons

The St. Bernard Vikings will head out on the road to square off against the North Saxons at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. The last three games St. Bernard has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

St. Bernard took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They skirted past St. Anthony 3-2. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last eight times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Juan Sandoval spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits and racked up six Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, St. Bernard saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Chase Williams, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.

The home team had won the previous four meetings between North and Wiseburn- Da Vinci, and Wiseburn- Da Vinci kept the tradition alive. The Saxons fell just short of the Wolves by a score of 6-5 on Friday.

Nicky Gonzalez was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Those RBI marked the first that he brought in this season.

St. Bernard's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.57 runs across that stretch. As for North, their loss dropped their record down to 5-9-1.

St. Bernard's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Vikings have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for North, though, as they've been averaging only 0.9 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will St. Bernard continue to outrun the ball?
