Basketball Recap: Maywood/Hayes Center's Loss Ends Four-Game Winning Streak on the Road

Maywood/Hayes Center was the 60-34 winner over Maxwell when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Maywood/Hayes Center Wolves took a 57-46 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Maxwell Wildcats on Tuesday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Wolves came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 126th, while the Wildcats are ranked 259th).

Maywood/Hayes Center's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kade Broz, who posted nine points along with seven boards and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaxson Anders, who had 11 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Maywood/Hayes Center smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 24 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Maxwell's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cole Huffman led the charge by going 7 of 13 on his way to 21 points and seven rebounds. The dominant performance gave Huffman a new career-high in boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Joaquin Vega, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 14 points and eight rebounds.

Maywood/Hayes Center's loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-4. As for Maxwell, their record now sits at 3-8.

Maywood/Hayes Center will square off against Sandhills/Thedford at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Maxwell, they will challenge South Loup at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
