Baseball Recap: Shiprock Wins Going Away Against Zuni

Shiprock's game last Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Zuni Thunderbirds as Shiprock made off with an 11-1 win. The Chieftains might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by six runs or more this season.

The team relied heavily on Khalil Nakai, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Shiprock's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 2-4 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Antonio James, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Shiprock was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .381. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in three consecutive contests.

Shiprock is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. Zuni's defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-6.

Looking ahead, Shiprock will be playing in front of their home fans against Navajo Prep at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Navajo Prep has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.89 runs per game on average), something Shiprock will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Zuni, they have already played their next match, a 7-4 win against Gallup on the 27th.
