Basketball Recap: Westwood Takes a Loss

Westwood has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 69-63 heartbreaker at the hands of the Mexia Black Cats. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Panthers came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 170th, while the Black Cats are ranked 415th).

When it comes to explaining why Westwood lost on Tuesday, don't look at Kavian Bryant. Despite the final result, he almost dropped a double-double on 25 points and nine boards. That was a full 39.7% of Westwood's points, marking the seventh time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. Sebastian Lathan was another key player, dropping a double-double on ten points and 13 rebounds.

Westwood's defeat dropped their record down to 9-3. As for Mexia, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-7.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Westwood will host Buffalo at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Westwood knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past eight matches -- so hopefully Buffalo likes a good challenge. Mexia and Elkhart will compete for holiday cheer at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
