Softball Recap: Wood River Sets Scoring Season-High Against Minico

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wood River). They blew past the Minico Spartans 23-6 on Thursday. The Wolverines have beaten the Spartans the last eight times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Spartans has come to flipping the script.

Makinzie Nelson made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Nelson was even better at the plate, firing off three home runs, seven RBI, and one double while going 4-for-4. She has been hot, having posted at least one home run the last eight times she's played.

In other batting news, Wood River got a massive performance out of Hadley Elsbree, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Marlee McLean was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four runs and three RBI.

Wood River kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 26 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Wood River pushed their record up to 7-9 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-9 Canyon Ridge and 2-16 Minico (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 11% over those games). As for Minico, they are on a 16-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-16.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wood River will host Pocatello at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Wolverines' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Thunder have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season. As for Minico, they will be playing at home against Canyon Ridge at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
