MaxPreps Sac-Joaquin Section Top 25 high school football rankings

Top five stay the same in anticipation on Friday's showdown between No. 1 Folsom and No. 2 Granite Bay.

Upsets were not the norm for Zero Week within the Sac-Joaquin Section, but there were some tremors.

Roseville jolted previous No. 17 Cosumnes Oaks of Elk Grove 23-7 and Oak Ridge belting previous No. 16 Vista del Lago of Folsom 38-0 in a showdown expected to be much closer.

This week's titanic matchups include top-ranked Folsom visiting No. 2 Granite Bay and No. 6 Pleasant Grove entertaining No. 9 Burbank.

1. (Last week 1) Folsom (1-0)
A year ago, the Bulldogs unleashed Jake Browning against Woodcreek (Roseville), and he tossed a modern-day national prep record-tying 10 touchdown passes en route to 63 for the season. This time, Browning had seven scoring strikes, two to Troy Knox, in a 56-21 victory. Browning completed 31 of 38 passes for 438 yards and was sacked once with one interception as the line played well, as did the the defense, headed by Eddie Flores.

2. (2) Granite Bay 0-0
The defending CIF State Division I champion Grizzlies did not have a Zero Week game, but coaches and players soaked in the Folsom rout of Woodcreek. Granite Bay returns Fly back Tony Ellison, an Arizona commit, LBs Dylan Keeney and Cameron Smith and DB Luke Bussey. Each knows he has to get to Folsom QB Jake Browning to stall momentum.

3. (3) Del Oro (Loomis) 1-0

The Golden Eagles beat Logan (Union City) 27-14 in the Honor Bowl Wounded Warriors showcase in welcoming in a new tailback star. Tevon Rhyne ran for two touchdowns, including a highlight 51-yarder, and Dylan Kainrath powered in for a touchdown to beat the Colts for the second successive season. DE Tanner Woods had 10 tackles.

4. (4) St. Mary's (Stockton) 1-0
The Rams beat talented Stockdale (Bakersfield) on the road 34-27 despite five turnovers. Senior quarterback leader Kaleb Parrish scrambled to avoid the rush and scored on a 31-yard run with 2:30 to play and then hit Jalen Ratliff for a 2-point conversion for the difference. One Rams fumble was inside the Stockdale 1 and another was returned 70 yards for a score.

5. (5) Elk Grove (1-0)
Beat Lincoln (Stockton) 27-0 for the second successive season with the wing-T in high gear. Wadus Parker, a 1,300-yard runner a year ago in shared duty, rushed for 181 yards on 32 carries and 3 touchdowns, and Tommy Arnold hit Noah Letuligasenoa Ta'amu for a 49-yard touchdown. Spencer Sheff was strong on both sides of the ball.

6. (6) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 1-0
The Eagles beat previous No. 8 Rocklin 28-14 behind the marvel that is Deaundre Terrell. The senior QB ran for scores of 60 and 2 yards and tossed scoring strikes of 54 yards to Esley Simmons and 24 yards to Wyatt Demps. Pleasant Grove had a clear speed element against a very good foe.

7. (7) Central Catholic (Modesto) 1-0
The Raiders steamed Placer (Auburn) 49-13 in a meeting of small-school section powers. CC rushed for 375 yards on 10.4 yards an carry. Matt Ringer rushed for 187 yards and four touchdowns. This is a program that has 16 section titles and won a CIF State bowl last season.

8. (9) Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) (1-0)
The Trojans ushered in a new QB in sophomore Ian Book, and he dazzled in his debut, completing 14 of 16 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns. He had an 81-yard strike to Justin Priest, who had 2 scores. Josh Wellman had 75 yards rushing and a score and Thomas Mahlman had 12 tackles.

9. (10) Burbank (Sacramento) 1-0
The Titans raced past previous No. 11 Napa 35-9 behind QB Ernest Jenkins and runners Calvin Green, Harrison Anderson, Benjamin Jones and lineman leader Printess Johnson. DL Feaumoengalu ( Ngalu) Tapa and Gerald Pliman had 2 sacks each.

10. (12) Merced (1-0)
The Bears held on in a thriller over Clovis West (Fresno), 40-39, rejoicing when an extra-point attempt with no time left hooked left. Kris Turner-Jackson scored on a 2-yard run with 1:26 left to make it 40-33, and QB Tyrone Williams passed for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns in his varsity debut.

11. (8) Rocklin (0-1)
The Thunder lost to No. 6 Pleasant Grove 28-14 as it struggled to handle the speed in the open field. But the line play on both sides was encouraging. QB Logan Webb and RB Joshua Gurnaby are leaders.
Next: At No. 8 Oak Ridge, Friday

12. (15) Grant (Sacramento) (1-0)
The Pacers start 17 underclassmen but they grew in a hurry, rallying from two touchdowns down to beat longtime Northern Section power Paradise 33-14. Donovan Brown sparkled in his varsity quarterbacking debut, tossing four touchdowns, three to Ariyon Huff, and the defense forced six turnovers.

13. (18) Inderkum (Sacramento) 1-0

In a speed showdown against Monterey Trail (Sacramento), the Tigers were faster than the Mustangs in storming to a 46-12 rout. QB C. J. Spencer led the way in accounting for four touchdowns.

14. (19) Vacaville (0-0)
The Bulldogs had a bye. This has been a powerhouse since the 1970s, first under famed/late coach Tom Zunino and in recent years under his son-in-law Mike Papadopulos, who will usher in a 10-0 JV team with returners in WR/DB David Mewborn and DL Jeramy Sweany.

15. (20) Franklin (Elk Grove) (1-0)
The young Wildcats had no offensive starters return from a 12-1 juggernaut, but the newcomers are coming of age, and fast. Sophomore QB Lamar Jackson had two first-half touchdowns and senior DB Robert Sanders had an interception return for a score in a 28-12 victory over Atwater.

16. (21) Los Banos (1-0)
The Tigers are a work in progress on offense, but the defense stood tall in beating longtime section small-school power Escalon 20-3. A year ago, the teams split in high-scoring affairs, including Escalon in the playoffs.

17. (22) Antelope (1-0)
The Titans beat previous No. 23 Del Campo (Fair Oaks) 14-7 behind QB Tyler McCombs, who ran for a score and hit Mister Harriel for a 22-yard strike, and the defense stymied a power running game.

18. (24) Rio Linda (0-0)
The Knights were idle but did catch Roseville's impressive 23-7 win over Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove), which handled Rio Linda in a scrimmage. Rio Linda can run with power or speed with Leonard Skattebo and Marcel Brown.

19. (NR) Roseville (1-0)
The Tigers pulled the biggest upset of the section in dumping previous No. 17 Cosumnes Oaks 23-7, thanks to defense, including LB Matt Razzano, who had a 65-yard interception return for a score, and Jordan Kunaszyk, who had 10 tackles. Roseville went 2-8 last season.
Next: at No. 18 Rio Linda, Friday

20. (NR) Center (Antelope) (1-0)
Joe Swen rushed for 164 yards, scored four touchdowns and caught a 3-yard scoring strike from Tyrel Anderson in a 70-0 rout of Encina Prep (Sacramento). Center was a football power in the late 1980s and returned to a bit of glory last season with a 10-win season under coach Digol J'Beily.

21. (23) Del Campo (Fair Oaks) 0-1
The Cougars lost a lot of firepower and leadership when quarterback Preston Semkw collapsed on the sideline just before the second-half kickoff of the opening loss to Antelope, suffering from asthma. He is fine, and vows to play in the next game.

22. (NR) Manteca (1-0)

The Buffaloes are talking 10-0 start, at least the players and alumni in soft whispers. The coaches, of course, fret over the next practice, though and the talent is there to make it a good run. Hector Soto rushed for two scores and Alex Laurel opened the game with a sizzling 95-yard kickoff return in scoring five times in a 47-20 victory over Central Valley (Ceres). Laurel's nickname is "Nitro."

23. (NR) Stagg (Stockton) 0-0
The Delta Kings, a powerhouse in the 1970s, returned to championship form last fall with a 9-1 regular season, losing only to St. Mary's. A host of talent is back, none more spectacular than QB Wayne Brooks.

24. (9) Napa (0-1)
The Indians could not deal with the speed and ferocity of Burbank, but Troy Mott-coached teams tend to recover quite nicely. The Monticello Empire League race with rival Vacaville is the primary goal.

(TIE) 25. (17) Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove) (0-1)
The Wolfpack sputtered badly in falling to previously unranked Roseville 23-7 as penalties and mistakes doomed them. WR Alex Van Dyke Jr. had two touchdowns called back.

(TIE) 25. (16) Vista del Lago (Folsom) 0-1
The Eagles expected a much better effort against Oak Ridge but remain a talented work in progress after falling 38-0. QB Matt Jimison and RB Josh Pfeffer vow better days ahead.
