Softball Recap: Cumberland Comes Up Short

Cumberland extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 1-10 in the process. They came up short against the Pilgrim Patriots, falling 14-2. The Clippers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Patriots apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

As for Pilgrim, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-1. Considering they have won four matches by more than seven runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

For Pilgrim's part, Gretchen Dombeck spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Marin Prest, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-3. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Carli Harker was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Cumberland is set to face off against their familiar foe Coventry at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Pilgrim will challenge rival Smithfield at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Patriots 3, the Sentinels 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
