The Steelers tend to look to the south when looking for their first-round pick.
Video: Pittsburgh Steelers Draft FactsWhen the Pittsburgh Steelers look for their top pick, they usually look south. Of their 10 first-round picks over the last decade, all but two are natives are from Southern states: Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas.
Here are some fun facts about the Steelers' picks since 2006, and after that, check out the chart to see where every Steelers pick since 2006 went to high school.
* The only two first-rounders not from the south were running back Rashard Mendenhall of
Niles West (Skokie, Ill.) and guard David DeCastro of
Bellevue (Wash.). Mendenhall was the 23rd pick of 2008 and DeCastro the 24th pick of 2012.
* These are the first-round picks from Georgia: Linebacker Jarvis Jones of
Carver (Columbus, Ga.), linebacker Alvin "Bud" Dupree of
Wilkinson County (Irwinton, Ga.) and defensive end Cameron Heyward of
Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, Ga.). Jones was picked 17th in 2013, Dupree was No. 22 in 2015 and Heyward No. 31 in 2011.
* These are the first-round picks from Florida: Linebacker Ryan Shazier of
Plantation (Fla.), center Maurkice Pouncey of
Lakeland (Fla.) and wide receiver Santonio Holmes of
Glades Central (Belle Glade, Fla.). Shazier was the 15th pick in 2014, Pouncey the 18th selection in 2010 and Holmes the 25th pick in 2006.
* Overall, since 2006, the Steelers have picked a whopping 17 players from Florida, 11 from Texas, eight from California and seven from Georgia.
