Softball Game Preview: Helix Highlanders vs. Sweetwater Red Devils

Helix is on a five-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Sweetwater is on a five-game streak of away wins (also dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The Highlanders will take on the Red Devils in a tournament on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

Sweetwater's hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Thursday: Helix hadn't allowed a single run the last three times they've hit the field. The Highlanders never let Southwest SD get on the board and left with a 19-0 win on Monday. Fans of the Highlanders have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.

Lea Moya made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one hit any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Lillianna Benabdeljalil was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Naleia Medina, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Helix kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, Sweetwater made easy work of Fallbrook on Tuesday and carried off a 14-4 victory.

Evelyn Aguilar was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Gabriella Sena was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Helix's win bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Sweetwater, their victory bumped their record up to 2-0.
