Baseball Recap: Southwestern Extends Winning Streak to Three

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Southwestern had no problem doing just that on Monday. They came out on top against the Carlinville Cavaliers by a score of 7-3. The victory was familiar territory for the Piasa Birds, who have now won three games in a row.

The team relied heavily on Ian Brantley, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Southwestern's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-2 (and 7-16 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Johnny Kunz, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Southwestern's win bumped their record up to 13-18. As for Carlinville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 15 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-17 record this season.

Southwestern will square off against North Mac at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Panthers' pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so the Piasa Birds' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Carlinville does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
