Game recap: Mt. Zion high school football team picks up early lead in victory over Effingham

Mt. Zion (Ill.) grabbed a lead in the first quarter and rode that momentum to a 26-6 win over Effingham (Ill.).

The Braves put up six points in the opening frame. Mt. Zion scored on a passing touchdown.

After taking the lead on a passing touchdown in the first quarter, MZ led 12-0 at the half.

The Braves expanded their lead to 20 points entering the fourth quarter. Mt. Zion scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown pass by Sam Olson to Austin Ray.



Nathan Vail played well for the Flaming Hearts. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.

MZ's most effective player was Ray. The junior running back ran for two touchdowns and caught one touchdown. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.

Effingham's lone touchdown came on a 36-yard pass from Vail to Matt Wohltman in the fourth quarter.

The Braves had struggled this season, allowing 31.1 points per game. However, Mt. Zion's defense dug in and limited EHS well below its season average of 15.9 points per game.

Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 28-0 win for MZ.

Effingham (2-6) goes up against Mahomet-Seymour in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Mt. Zion (3-5) locks horns with Civic Memorial also in a non-conference game.
