Basketball Recap: Thatcher Takes a Loss

Thatcher lost against Douglas back in November of 2023 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The matchup between the Thatcher Eagles and the Douglas Bulldogs didn't end well, with the Thatcher Eagles falling 66-49. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 179th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 48th).

It was another big night for Francia Rubio, who went 8 of 15 en route to 18 points along with seven assists and seven blocks for Douglas. With that strong performance, Rubio is now averaging an impressive 2.1 blocks per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Keyra Espinosa, who went 7 of 17 en route to 15 points and seven rebounds.

Thatcher has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season. As for Douglas, they pushed their record up to 14-2 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Thatcher will square off against Catalina at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Douglas, they will take on Rio Rico at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Douglas is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.9 points per game this season.
