Baseball Recap: Eastern Triumphs

It may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but Eastern ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Crawford County Wolfpack, sneaking past 7-5. That's two games straight that the Musketeers have won by exactly two runs.

Reese Lindley and Carter Smith made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Lindley tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Smith struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Eastern is 2-1 when Smith allows three or fewer hits, but 3-5 otherwise. At bat, Lindley went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Smith got on base in two of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave Smith a new career-high.

In other batting news, Alton Swartz was excellent, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

Eastern pushed their record up to 5-6 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Crawford County, they are on a ten-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-11.

Coming up, Eastern will face off against Austin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Crawford County, they will take on West Washington at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wolfpack's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Senators have averaged an impressive 6.4 runs per game this season.
