Basketball Game Preview: Gateway Charter Griffins vs. South Fort Myers Wolfpack

The Gateway Charter Griffins will challenge the South Fort Myers Wolfpack at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gateway Charter is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.8 points per game this season.

Last Tuesday, Gateway Charter humbled East Lee County with a 63-36 victory. The Griffins have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 27 points or more this season.

Gateway Charter's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Katelyn Rosario, who posted 15 points. Ashanti Taylor was another key player, putting up 13 points.

While South Fort Myers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past LaBelle 36-34. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Wolfpack.

Gateway Charter better focus on containing Mariah Thorne and Ja'Meria Church as the pair were huge in South Fort Myers' win. Thorne put up 13 points along with seven boards and seven steals, while Church dropped a double-double on 12 points and 16 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Thorne has scored at least a third of South Fort Myers' points. The team also got some help courtesy of Keylin Lavariega, who had five points.

Gateway Charter's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.3 points per game. As for South Fort Myers, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season.

Gateway Charter suffered a grim 52-32 defeat to South Fort Myers when the teams last played back in December of 2022. Can Gateway Charter avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
