Baseball Recap: Liberty Minutemen vs. Appomattox County Raiders
Liberty extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping their season record down to 1-11 in the process. They lost 20-0 to the Appomattox County Raiders. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Raiders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-3 back in March.
Liberty saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aiden Cottrell, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base. Ethan Russell also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
As for Appomattox County, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-5. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Appomattox County's side, Jack Wilkerson and Caid Burch were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Wilkerson tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Burch pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Wilkerson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single walk in five consecutive appearances. At bat, Wilkerson got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one run and one double, while Burch earned three runs and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Burch a new career-high.
In other batting news, Appomattox County got a massive performance out of R J Martin, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Those four RBI gave Martin a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Evan Carwile, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Looking ahead, Liberty will head out to challenge Glass at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers' pitching crew has only allowed three runs per game this season, so the Minutemen's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Appomattox County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Dan River at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wildcats will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Raiders surely won't give up without a fight.
