Softball Recap: Lunenburg Beats Ayer Shirley for Their Third Straight Win

Lunenburg extended their winning streak to three on Wednesday, bumping their season record up to 11-6 in the process. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over the Ayer Shirley Panthers. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Blue Knights also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

Maegan Martell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Chloe Koziol was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one double.

As for Ayer Shirley, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11-1 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games.

On Ayer Shirley's side, Marney Hoeske was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple and one run.

Lunenburg has already played their next game (against St. Bernard's Central Catholic), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Ayer Shirley, they will face off against Bromfield at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. The Trojans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.33 runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
