Baseball Recap: Wellington Has No Trouble Against New London

Wellington had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. Everything went their way against the New London Wildcats as they made off with a 13-2 win. That looming 13-2 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Dukes yet this season.

Grant Kehl made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Kehl was even better at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-4. He is becoming a predictor of Wellington's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't).

In other pitching news, Landon Beall looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Johnnie Kinter, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Burns, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run.

Wellington hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New London struck out seven times.

Wellington's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 4-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for New London, they are on a seven-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wellington will welcome Columbia at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Raiders' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Dukes' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for New London, they will face off against Mapleton at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
