Volleyball Preview: Whitmire Wolverines vs. Thornwell Saints
Whitmire has gone 3-0 against Thornwell recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Whitmire Wolverines will head out to square off against the Thornwell Saints at 5:30 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Whitmire took a loss when they played away from home last Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Ware Shoals with a sharp 3-0 win.
Meanwhile, Thornwell waltzed into their matchup on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over the Hornets.
Thornwell took Ware Shoals into a fifth set where they got it done with a six-point win. The match finished with set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 15-9.
Thornwell can attribute much of their success to Madi Porter, who had ten digs and three kills, and Stroud Addison, who had six digs and three aces. That's the most aces Addison has posted since back in September.
Thornwell was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 21 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least six aces in 16 consecutive contests.
Whitmire now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Thornwell, they pushed their record up to 9-9-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.
Whitmire came out on top in a nail-biter against Thornwell in their previous meeting back in September, sneaking past 3-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for Whitmire since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
