Recap: Eunice Cardinals vs. Escalante Lobos
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only The Eunice Cardinals walked away with it. They took their game at home on Saturday with ease, bagging a 49-0 victory over Escalante. The win was familiar territory for Eunice who now have five in a row.
It was another big night for Elijah Melancon, who threw for 270 yards and six touchdowns while completing 90.9% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Melancon was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 52 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddox Mata, who picked up 131 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Eunice's victory was their third straight at home , which pushed their record up to 9-2. It's not like the team was facing easy opposition over that stretch either, as it included 9-2 Texico and 7-4 Jal (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 60.6% over those games). As for Escalante, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-7.
Eunice will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Tularosa at 3:00 p.m. Tularosa is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. Escalante does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
