Basketball Preview: Smithville Seminoles vs. Houlka Wildcats

Smithville and the Wildcats are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2016, but not for long. The Smithville Seminoles will square off against the Houlka Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Smithville has three straight wins, the Wildcats have 35 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Last Thursday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Smithville beat the Eagles 32-27.

Smithville's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Halle Sargent, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. Sargent has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mary Haley Hood, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Meanwhile, Houlka took a serious blow against the Cougars on Thursday, falling 58-7. While losing is never fun, Houlka can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 299th, while the Cougars are ranked 57th).

Smithville is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a massive bump to their 10-16 record this season. As for Houlka, their defeat was their 24th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-22.

Everything went Smithville's way against the Wildcats in their previous meeting on Tuesday as the Seminoles made off with a 48-26 victory. Does Smithville have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
