Newtown was handed a seven-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Bowne Wildcats 3-1. That's more bragging rights for the Pioneers, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Joseph Ramirez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Dariel Mateo was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Cristian Contreras Ortega was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run.

Newtown has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Bowne, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Newtown will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Wildcats: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
