Baseball Recap: Hillsdale Comes Up Short

Hillsdale had lost ten straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 3-16 to make it 11. They lost 10-0 to the Springport Spartans. If the Hornets were looking for revenge after losing 12-10 to the Spartans when the teams met back in April of 2019, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Springport, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season. The result was nothing new for Springport, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.

For Springport's part, Marshall Shoemaker was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Shoemaker has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gibson Overweg, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two doubles. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Drew Kregel was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hillsdale will face off against Camden-Frontier at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Hornets are facing the Redskins at the right time seeing as the Redskins are stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Springport, they are taking a road trip to face off against Maple Valley at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
