Football Recap: Mountain Valley Sets Scoring Season-High Against Cotopaxi

Mountain Valley scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 42-33 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cotopaxi Pirates. The Wolves lost against the Pirates in their previous head to head back in September of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 71-14 score last time.

Despite the loss, Mountain Valley had strong showings from Tanner Shellabarger, who rushed for 93 yards and one TD, and Tye Salaz, who threw for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes. Shellabarger didn't just play on offense: he also made four total tackles and defended one pass in addition to snagging an interception.

Mountain Valley has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season. Cotopaxi's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7.

Mountain Valley does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Cotopaxi, they are taking a road trip to square off against North Park at 1:00 p.m. on November 1. The Pirates will be up against the Wildcats' rather soft defense (which has allowed 54.71 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
