Willow Glen and Leland are an even 4-4 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Rams will head out on the road to challenge the Chargers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Willow Glen will come into the match with an undefeated record on the line.
On Tuesday, Willow Glen made easy work of Santa Teresa and carried off a 9-3 victory. Considering the Rams have won 11 contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Catalina Medina was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Medina was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Elizabeth Dilbeck and Haley Ocumen did most of the damage at the plate: Dilbeck went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Ocumen got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most hits Dilbeck has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Lea Crawford, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Willow Glen was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .367 or higher in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Leland). They walked away with a 13-10 win over Leigh on Tuesday. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Chargers' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Ella Fergason was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. She also put up a stolen base, which was her first of the season. Lily O'Hanneson was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs and one stolen base.
Willow Glen pushed their record up to 21-0 with the victory, which was their 11th straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Leland, their record is now 4-8.
Leland's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Willow Glen has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.5 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Leland, though, as they've been averaging only 2.2 strikeouts. Will Willow Glen keep running through batters, or will the Chargers buck the trend?
Willow Glen beat Leland 5-0 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Will the Rams repeat their success, or do the Chargers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
