Football Recap: Port St. Joe Piles Up the Points Against Rutherford

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Port St. Joe). They breezed past the Rutherford Rams to the tune of 54-20 on Friday. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Tiger Sharks just coasted through the last quarter.

Port St. Joe had a senior duo take command as Corban Butts rushed for 131 yards and three scores on only 15 carries and Eli Harris threw for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns. With that strong performance, Butts is now averaging an impressive 104.7 rushing yards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Elijah Beard, who gained 105 total yards.

Port St. Joe didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Rutherford to a completion percentage of just 40%. The Tiger Sharks have been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.6 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.6 in their last three games.

Port St. Joe's defense didn't let Jaleel Reed, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Butts, Darion Cherry, and Blake Childress, who each picked up one sack apiece. Port St. Joe received some extra help from Colt Patterson, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

When it comes to explaining why Rutherford lost, don't look at Reed. Despite the final result, he rushed for 48 yards and one TD, and also threw for 163 yards and one touchdown. 81 of those passing yards were hauled in by Khazion Rochelle, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

The win got Port St. Joe back to even at 3-3. As for Rutherford, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.

Port St. Joe didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 29-14 loss against Chipley on the 10th. As for Rutherford, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 49-14 victory against North Bay Haven Academy on the 10th.
