Baseball Recap: Cholla Comes Up Short

Cholla had lost three straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 10-6 to make it four. They fell 7-2 to the Douglas Bulldogs. The Chargers were not able to make up for their loss to the Bulldogs from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Cholla saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carlos Alvarez, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

As for Douglas, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-8-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.

On Douglas' side, Jose Ivan Higuera was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Higuera has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single hit in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1 stolen bases per game.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Andres Ortiz, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Abel Clinch was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

While Cholla had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
