Softball Recap: Carlsbad Finds Playoff Glory Versus Atrisco Heritage Academy

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Carlsbad walked away with it. Everything went their way against the Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars on Thursday as they made off with a 10-4 win. Considering the Cavemen/Cavegirls have won 11 contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Aubrey Hernandez made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one RBI.

In other batting news, Carlsbad got a massive performance out of Katrina Ortega, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with six RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those two doubles gave Ortega a new career-high. Kalion Fuentes was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.

Carlsbad has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 16 of their last 17 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.2 runs over those games. As for Atrisco Heritage Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 20-8.

Coming up, Carlsbad will take on Cibola at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Atrisco Heritage Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
