Softball Recap: Southern Wayne Comes Up Short

Southern Wayne extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 23 on Thursday, dropping them down to 0-15. They lost 20-10 to the Fike Demons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Demons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 19-8 back in March.

As for Fike, the victory snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 5-12 record. The high-scoring effort was just what they needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.

For Fike's part, Cayley Jones made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Jones was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Leyla Lopez, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March of 2025. Casi Carter was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Southern Wayne will be playing in front of their home fans against C.B. Aycock at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Fike, they will take on J.H. Rose at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Demons' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rampants have averaged an impressive 8 runs per game this season.
